Sketchbook : Fort Marion (Saint Augustine, Florida), 1876 Oct.

Sixteen pencil, crayon and ink drawings in red, yellow, green, blue and black, depicting scenes at Fort Marion, and of Cheyenne life on the Plains, including buffalo hunts, celebrations, and groups of Indians on horseback. The note, "Drawn by Howling Wolf (Cheyenne) Oct 1876 Fort Marion" is written in pencil inside the front cover in an unidentified hand.

Cheyenne warrior and son of Cheyenne chief Eagle Head. He was imprisoned from 1875 to 1878 at Fort Marion, Saint Augustine, Florida, with other "hostile" Plains Indians. Their jailer, Captain Richard H. Pratt, encouraged the artistic talent of the Indians and provided them with drawing supplies.
